Drita, My Homegirl by Jenny Lombard

Drita is a refugee from war-torn Kosovo, and the new girl in school. Maxie makes fun of Drita and their teacher partners them together to work on a research project studying Drita and her country. The girls quickly learn they have more in common than they thought and discover many things they would not normally have learned.

If you have read this book, let me know what you thought of it. Who was your favorite character and why? What was your favorite part and why? Would you recommend this book to a friend?

I thought that Drita my home girl was very cool!!!!!I also though that Drita and her home girl were best friends. When Drita and her friend went to school they would always talk at school and when they get home from school. I also though that Drita,Maxie, and Giyshe were best friends too!!!!!!I think Drita said my cousin be on telavison i did not know what she ment when she said that...I think if Drita said that or anybody said i think i would try to understand it.....I did not know what war-torn kosovo ment but i looked it up in my dads book and then i knew what it ment..When Drita jumped out of her seat I though she was mad but then i remembered what it meant!!!!!! Sincerely, DQ Joseph

DQ,
I am so glad you went and looked up what you weren't sure about. That is what good readers do.

This book led to a lengthy class discussion about Kosovo and war and the effects that war has on a country but particularily its people. My class enjoyed this book especially as we learned about a new culture.

The best thing about this book was that in the beginnig it was awesome to me that Maxie had to laern about Drita because her teacher told her to for her prject they were partners and Maxie did't want to because she did not speak english but when she saw her villge on TV then she started to be nice to her NiiyaGerald mrs Rawl

Drita is a great book because
she just moved to New York
and she does not have friends
until she meet Maxy.I think
that when she meet Maxy she
did not have any friends.
