Set in 1971, Frannie is eleven years old and lives with her parents and older brother who is deaf. When there is a new student into their sixth grade class, Frannie's classmates are not welcoming at all. Frannie begins to really think about an Emily Dickinson poem they are learning about in class and how it can relate to her life and the lives of others around her.
